Habitat homes are funded by donations from individuals, churches, and businesses.  In addition, many churches and organizations provide complete sponsorship for specific construction projects.  For this reason the average cost of a Gaston County Habitat home is $75,000 for a 1,100 sq. ft., 3 bedroom, two bath home and $80,000 for a 1,300 sq. ft. 4 bedroom, two bath home.  Habitat's no-interest, 25 year mortgages require average monthly payments of $400 - $450 a month. Taxes and insurance are included in the monthly payment.

 

 

There are three requirements for qualifying to becoming a Habitat Gaston homeowner:

1. Need of housing –

  • Living in overcrowded housing
  • Living in substandard housing
  • Living in a high crime area
  • Being a resident of public housing
  • Being unable to secure adequate housing through the private market

2. Ability to pay –

  • A steady source of income is required
  • If income is from employment, must have worked at current job for at least six months
  • Must live in Gaston County at least one year or work in Gaston County for six months

3. Willingness to partner with Habitat –

  • Applicants must be willing to perform at least 325 sweat equity hours working on their homes and/or other Habitat projects
  • Have a commitment to a drug-free community
  • Be committed to maintaining their home and yard

  1. Two month’s pay stubs for all wage earners who will live in the house.
  2. If you are separated or divorced, a copy of your divorce or separation papers.
  3. A copy of all bills you pay. This includes utility bills, car payments, credit card statements, car insurance, other insurance, furniture bills, hospital and doctor bills. All bills you pay each month.
  4. Copy of current IRS tax return and W2.
  5. Copy of current credit report (within 30 days).  Go to   www.annualcreditreport.com
  6. Copy of Drivers License and Social Security card.
